Taiwan Life Insider Indicted Over Alleged Misappropriation of More Than NT$16.56 Million

A Taiwan Life Insurance employee surnamed Yang was accused of exploiting system vulnerabilities in the handling of policyholder refunds and suspense-account funds, using workplace access privileges to transfer money out. Suspense-account funds are temporary deposits awaiting verification or repayment. The case raises concerns about the security of policyholder funds and whether the insurer properly enforced access management, internal controls and monitoring of unusual transactions.

Prosecutors recently concluded their investigation and indicted Yang, alleging that the employee embezzled and transferred more than NT$16.56 million in policyholder refunds and suspense-account funds over four years. Yang was also accused of misappropriating gift vouchers worth nearly NT$100,000. The Financial Supervisory Commission confirmed that Taiwan Life had reported the matter as a material unexpected incident in 2025. The insurer could be fined up to NT$12 million if investigators find that it breached internal-control requirements.
