Optimism Vote Redirects 546.9 Million OP From Airdrops
Optimism, an Ethereum layer-2 ecosystem built around the OP Stack, originally earmarked 19% of its initial OP token supply for user airdrops. The Optimism Collective distributed 269.1 million OP across five rounds, but the Optimism Foundation said broad-based giveaways no longer fit its strategy of expanding OP Mainnet and OP Enterprise among chains, protocols and financial institutions. The shift puts greater emphasis on partnerships, liquidity incentives and institutional adoption.
Voting ended on Aug. 19, 2026, with 17.97 million OP cast in favor and 10.93 million against, clearing the 51% approval threshold and moving the proposal into the execution queue. The measure reclassifies the remaining 546.9 million OP, worth about $49 million, as a Foundation-controlled Strategic Ecosystem Fund. A deciding vote from an Optimism-funded team intensified debate over governance concentration, future user rewards and disclosure requirements for the fund.
