HKMA Links CMU With SIX to Open Swiss, Spanish Market Access
Hong Kong’s Central Moneymarkets Unit, or CMU, has provided custody, settlement and asset-servicing infrastructure for debt securities since 1990. Assets under custody reached about HK$5.2 trillion at end-2025. CMU OmniClear and SIX, which operates market infrastructure in Switzerland and Spain, signed a memorandum of understanding on Oct. 18, 2024, laying the groundwork for a direct link aimed at expanding cross-border investment and developing Hong Kong as a regional, multi-asset post-trade hub.
The Hong Kong Monetary Authority said on July 30, 2026, that CMU had launched a direct linkage with SIX, allowing members to access securities in the Swiss and Spanish markets through CMU. The service covers settlement, custody and asset servicing and marks CMU OmniClear’s first move into equity post-trade services. By placing bonds and stocks within a single infrastructure, the link is designed to streamline portfolio management, widen international market access and support more efficient use of assets and collateral.
