Elizabeth Warren Accuses SEC Chair Paul Atkins of Misleading Congress on Enforcement Data
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission is responsible for enforcing securities laws and protecting investors. Under Paul Atkins, the agency has shifted its focus toward fraud cases during the Trump administration and, since February 2025, has dropped seven crypto enforcement cases, including those involving Coinbase and Binance. The change in enforcement priorities has raised questions about whether market oversight is being influenced by political and industry ties.
The SEC said on April 7, 2026, that it brought 456 enforcement actions in fiscal 2025, below the annual range of 583–868 from 2015 through 2024. It reported $17.9 billion in nominal monetary relief, or about $2.7 billion after excluding legacy cases and other items. In an April 15 letter, Elizabeth Warren said Atkins had denied the trend at a February 12 hearing and may have misled Congress. She demanded a response by April 28.
