IBM, Scientists Achieve Fusion Breakthrough With Quantum and AI Computing
IBM has teamed up with U.S. national laboratories and Cleveland Clinic to combine quantum computing, AI and conventional high-performance computing to simulate the molecular structures of materials used to produce tritium, a fusion fuel. Because naturally occurring tritium is extremely scarce, a stable supply is critical to moving fusion energy from the laboratory to commercial deployment, making material design and breeding efficiency key bottlenecks.
The research team recently became the first to complete such material simulations using a hybrid computing architecture. The results show that today's quantum computers can already work alongside AI and conventional supercomputers to tackle complex materials-science problems. However, reports did not disclose the date of the findings, the number of qubits, the percentage increase in tritium-production efficiency or the value of the partnership. As of July 20, 2026, the advance remained limited to simulation and had not progressed to mass tritium production.
