Chinese State Media Exposes Four Structural Weaknesses in AI Industry
China’s AI industry has expanded rapidly with support from government policy and capital, and its core sector is now worth more than 1.2 trillion yuan. However, Qiushi, the flagship journal of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, said the country’s ability to replace foreign chips with domestic alternatives and compete with the CUDA software ecosystem remained key obstacles to technological self-reliance, with implications for supply-chain security and technological upgrades.
Qiushi published an investigative report in July 2026 identifying four structural weaknesses in China’s AI industry, including external restrictions on advanced chips and the difficulty domestic hardware faces in supporting the established CUDA ecosystem. The warning, issued as the sector’s output surpassed 1.2 trillion yuan, showed that growth in scale had yet to translate into leadership in core technologies.
