Tiangong, developed by the Beijing Humanoid Robot Innovation Center, is a prominent Chinese platform for testing embodied intelligence in full-size bipedal machines. Sprinting provides a demanding benchmark because it combines perception, gait planning, balance control and hardware durability at high speed. At the latest robot games, Tiangong completed the 100-meter sprint in 8.86 seconds, setting a world record for humanoid robots and beating the men’s human benchmark on elapsed time. The achievement was quickly overshadowed when the machine lost control after crossing the finish line, fell and caught fire. The incident highlighted persistent weaknesses in balance recovery, precise control and model generalization, suggesting that spectacular demonstrations remain well ahead of dependable, large-scale commercial use.
