Mistral AI Renames Chatbot Vibe, Adds AI Agent Capabilities
French AI startup Mistral AI was founded in April 2023 and initially sought to challenge U.S. players including OpenAI and Google with its large language models and Le Chat assistant. Its upgrade of the conversational product into an agent capable of executing tasks signals a shift toward automating enterprise work, software development and industrial engineering, while strengthening its competitive position as an independent European AI provider.
Mistral AI announced on May 28, 2026, that Le Chat would be renamed Vibe and gain Work and Code modes for handling email, research, documents and software development, respectively. The company also announced on May 22 that it had acquired Austria’s Emmi AI for an undisclosed sum and launched a manufacturing AI platform integrating physical models, engineering expertise and robotics.
