Bitcoin Retreats as Markets Watch CME Futures Gap and DeFi Hack Fallout
Bitcoin and Ether are key bellwethers for the cryptoasset market, while Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) futures are an important venue for institutional capital. Traders often view weekend gaps in CME futures as a technical signal that prices may later return to fill them. The vulnerability involving Kelp DAO’s rsETH also underscores how DeFi collateral risks can rapidly spread to lending protocols and altcoin markets.
As of April 20, 2026, Bitcoin had retreated to around $75,000 and Ether to about $2,300, below their April 17 highs of $78,300 and $2,460, respectively. CME futures gapped down from $77,540 to open at $74,600, leaving a 3.8% gap. Over the same weekend, an exploit involving rsETH caused losses of $292 million, while total value locked on Aave fell from $26.5 billion to $17.5 billion.
