Wikipedia Fights AI Data Exploitation and Multiple Existential Threats

After 25 years, Wikipedia — the world’s only open knowledge repository operated by the nonprofit Wikimedia Foundation — is facing an unprecedented existential crisis. The rise of generative AI has led technology giants to extract vast amounts of its content without payment to train AI models, contributing to an 8% decline in platform traffic. That has not only shaken the donation-based model that has long sustained the site but also threatened the foundations of trust underpinning the global internet commons and open knowledge.

In response, the Wikimedia Foundation appointed former diplomat Bernadette Meehan as chief executive in January 2026 and announced defensive measures on July 11. In addition to charging Google, Meta and other technology giants commercial data fees through its enterprise service, which generated $8.3 million in the 2024–2025 fiscal year, the foundation allocated $60.7 million in its 2025–2026 fiscal-year budget to protect volunteer editors facing persecution by authoritarian governments.
