GLEIF Uses AI to Sharpen Ownership Transparency

Complex multinational structures have made reliable ownership data essential for due diligence, compliance and risk management. The Global Legal Entity Identifier Foundation’s Level 2 data maps parent-subsidiary structures, branch-headquarters links and fund relationships, helping answer “who owns whom.” Yet much of that information remains buried in annual-report footnotes, tables and narrative disclosures, making manual extraction slow and difficult to scale.

GLEIF said on June 8, 2026, that it is using AI to extract subsidiary relationships from annual-report PDFs, structure the results and validate entries in the Global LEI Index, including triggering updates outside annual renewals. A survey by GLEIF and the Regulatory Oversight Committee found about 70% of respondents use Level 2 data and nearly 85% regard it as high quality. GLEIF also said optimized prompts allowed a smaller, cheaper model to outperform a larger one, though it disclosed neither accuracy figures nor investment costs.
