Open-Source Project riddle Combines E-Paper and AI to Recreate Harry Potter’s Magical Diary

Developer MaximeRivest created the open-source project riddle, inspired by Tom Riddle’s diary in Harry Potter, which interacts with whoever writes in it. The project transforms the reMarkable Paper Pro e-paper tablet from a reading and note-taking tool into a device that can understand handwriting and automatically write back, demonstrating the potential of integrating generative AI with e-paper hardware.

MaximeRivest recently released riddle’s source code. Its core is written in Rust and C/C++ to shorten the wait between handwriting input, AI inference and the display of a response on the e-paper screen. The system can connect to an AI backend compatible with the OpenAI API to process the input and compose a reply. However, currently available information does not specify an exact release date, development cost, latency in seconds or performance benchmark data.
