Y Combinator President Garry Tan Open-Sources GBrain to Give AI Agents Long-Term Memory

GBrain, developed by Y Combinator President Garry Tan, is designed to address AI agents’ tendency to forget information across conversations and long-running tasks. The system combines a “dream loop” with hybrid Postgres search, allowing assistants to continuously organize and connect memories to create an AI second brain with cumulative knowledge.

As of July 19, 2026, Tan had open-sourced the production-grade GBrain system he uses personally, allowing developers to download and deploy it free of charge. Its architecture follows a “fat skills, thin framework” design, enabling AI agents such as OpenClaw to extract information from past interactions and build a global memory. No commercial licensing fee has been announced.
