Wintermute Plans $1 Billion AI Push Beyond Crypto
Wintermute, one of the cryptocurrency industry’s major market makers, has historically depended on digital-asset trading volumes and spreads. A sharp slowdown in crypto activity is pushing the company to diversify, using its high-frequency trading expertise in other markets while building exposure to artificial-intelligence data center infrastructure. The shift matters because it would reduce Wintermute’s reliance on the cyclical crypto market and create a broader earnings base.
Bloomberg reported that Wintermute plans to invest about $1 billion over the next five years in high-frequency trading and AI data center infrastructure. The expansion will be financed entirely from retained earnings. By the end of 2027, the company aims to lift the share of revenue generated outside crypto to more than 50%, from about 10% currently, marking a rapid overhaul of its business mix as cryptocurrency trading volumes decline.
