U.S. House Lawmakers Urge Trump to Fill CFTC Vacancies as Crypto Oversight Expands
The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission is legally composed of five commissioners, with no more than three from the same political party to preserve bipartisan checks and balances. As Congress advances the CLARITY Act, which would expand the CFTC's authority over digital commodity spot markets, vacancies on the commission could affect rulemaking, enforcement and market confidence.
As of July 2026, senior members of the House Agriculture Committee, which oversees the CFTC, had urged President Trump to nominate candidates promptly. The commission is currently operating with Chairman Michael Selig as its sole member, leaving four vacancies. Lawmakers want its bipartisan membership restored before the CLARITY Act takes effect and its regulatory responsibilities expand. No specific monetary amount is involved.
