Andrew Ng Launches Open-Source Desktop AI Assistant OpenWorker

Generative AI is shifting beyond chatbots toward agents designed to complete tasks and produce usable outputs. Andrew Ng’s OpenWorker enters that market as an open-source, local-first desktop AI coworker focused on returning finished deliverables rather than conversational responses. Running workflows on a user’s own computer could appeal to developers and organizations seeking greater privacy, control and flexibility over the models and services behind their AI tools.

Ng recently unveiled OpenWorker with a four-layer architecture that operates entirely on the user’s machine. The software combines a desktop shell built with Tauri and a Python-based agent server, while using the aisuite LLM library as its foundation. Users can connect their own cloud API services or deploy local models. The available announcement did not specify a commercial price, funding amount or firm date for a broader production release.
