Coupa AI Agent Prepares $20.1 Million in Payments, Humans Retain Final Approval

Coupa’s Navi Payment Batch Creation Agent automates a labor-intensive part of accounts payable: assembling approved invoices into payment batches under company rules. The deployment matters because agentic AI is moving beyond recommendations into transaction preparation, where errors can expose companies to fraud, duplicate payments and control failures. Coupa’s design stops short of giving the software authority over cash: a human reviewer or separate control system must still approve and release funds, preserving segregation of duties.

Coupa said on Aug. 20, 2026, that the Navi agent had autonomously created 14 payment batches in its first five weeks in production, covering 2,395 payments worth $20.1 million. The company said one customer spent about $27 in AI credits and saved roughly $2,000 in accounts-payable staff costs in a single week. The figures demonstrate savings in batch preparation, but not end-to-end autonomous payments: the agent can organize and stage transactions, while final disbursement remains subject to independent approval.
