Communication University of China Cuts 16 Majors as AI Reshapes Education

The Communication University of China, a major training ground for the country’s media and cultural industries, is restructuring its curriculum as generative AI changes workflows in translation, photography and business. The overhaul highlights mounting pressure on universities to reconsider conventional degree programs, the skills students will need and the employment prospects of graduates as machines assume a larger share of professional tasks.

The university said it would eliminate 16 majors in 2025, including translation, photography, and international economics and trade, to prepare for what it calls an era of human-machine division of labor. It also plans a “classroom revolution” that will assign some specialized content to AI, while adding programs in game science, esports and branding. The changes redirect teaching resources toward digital-content fields and capabilities linked to emerging industries.
