U.S. Marines Select AI-Powered Bullfrog, Stirring Autonomous Weapons Concerns
Cheap armed drones in Ukraine and the Middle East have exposed a widening imbalance in air-defense costs, with a roughly $35,000 Shahed drone potentially drawing an interceptor costing as much as $4 million. Texas-based defense startup Allen Control Systems, or ACS, developed Bullfrog to combine AI, computer vision and precision robotics with existing machine guns, offering a cheaper kinetic defense against fast-moving unmanned aircraft.
ACS said on July 20, 2026, that the U.S. Marine Corps selected the Bullfrog M240 for integration with its Light Marine Air Defense Integrated System through a prototype Other Transaction Agreement initially valued at about $6.2 million. The 300-pound weapon station can fire 850 rounds a minute, engage targets nearly half a mile away and costs as little as $10 per drone kill, according to ACS. Its ground-targeting capability and lack of a reported technical bar against firing on people have intensified scrutiny of autonomous lethal weapons.
