Academy Revises Oscars Rules, Barring AI Actors and Scripts From Nominations

Generative AI can now synthesize actors’ likenesses and assist with screenwriting, fueling disputes in the film and television industry over employment rights, consent to performances and creative ownership. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which oversees the Oscars, has therefore made human authorship a core consideration in judging, clarifying the boundary between technological tools and creators eligible for awards.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced new rules for the 99th Academy Awards on May 1, 2026. Roles considered for acting awards must be performed by humans with their consent, while scripts considered for writing awards must be written by humans. The Academy may require filmmakers to provide additional information about their use of generative AI and evidence of human involvement. The rules apply to films released in 2026, with the awards ceremony scheduled for March 14, 2027.
