Nvidia Eyes Up to $10 Billion U.S. Dark-Fiber Network
Generative AI is shifting the computing race from individual chips to clusters spanning multiple data centers, making long-haul bandwidth and latency a strategic constraint. Control of dark fiber and optical transport could let Nvidia link NeoCloud partners directly, reduce reliance on the four hyperscalers that dominate hosting and interconnection capacity, and extend its reach from selling GPUs into GPU-as-a-service infrastructure.
Needham Securities analyst Ryan Koontz said on June 23 that Nvidia is believed to be planning an unannounced, ultra-high-capacity U.S. long-haul optical network. The project could cost $5 billion to $10 billion over three years and offer theoretical aggregate bandwidth of as much as 7.68 Pbps. Needham identified Corning, Ciena, Cisco, Nokia, Zayo and Lumen as potential beneficiaries, estimating Ciena could gain $500 million to $800 million in revenue over two to three years. Nvidia has not commented on the report.
