Kawasaki Heavy Industries, NVIDIA Partner on Physical AI Robotics
Kawasaki Heavy Industries, a major Japanese industrial robot manufacturer, is partnering with NVIDIA to combine its existing robotics technology with “physical AI,” which can perceive, reason and act in real-world environments. The collaboration will focus on medical-assistance and quadruped walking robots, underscoring generative AI’s accelerating expansion into manufacturing and service settings.
Kawasaki Heavy Industries recently announced plans to establish a joint research and development base with NVIDIA in California and to work with companies including Microsoft, ADI and Fujitsu on new solutions. The partners have not disclosed the investment amount or a formal opening date. News of the collaboration sent Kawasaki Heavy Industries shares up more than 11% at one point in intraday trading.

The initiative centers on NVIDIA Cosmos as its world model and includes the launch of Cosmos 3 Edge, a lightweight edge-computing model with 4 billion parameters. It aims to standardize the underlying robotics control platform and accelerate the shift to intelligent automation.
Kawasaki Heavy and Nvidia Team Up to Build AI-Powered Shipyard
Facing the severe challenges of an aging workforce and labor shortages in Japan’s shipbuilding industry, industrial conglomerate Kawasaki Heavy Industries and chipmaker Nvidia began a strategic partnership in May 2026 and established a physical AI research and development center in Silicon Valley. The companies aim to bring advanced AI and robotics into traditional industries including shipbuilding, healthcare and energy, using technological transformation to improve manufacturing efficiency. On July 16, 2026, Kawasaki Heavy announced an expansion of the Nvidia partnership to build a next-generation shipbuilding system at its Sakaide Works in Kagawa Prefecture. The system will use digital-twin technology to simulate production lines virtually and deploy AI agents in areas including design and quality control. The companies will also jointly develop welding robots to address labor shortages. Buoyed by the news, Kawasaki Heavy shares rose about 1.65% against the broader market trend in morning trading on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.
