OpenAI Upgrades ChatGPT Desktop App, Plans to Retire Atlas Browser

AI company OpenAI has continued to expand its ecosystem after previously launching the standalone ChatGPT Atlas browser to explore web-based applications. Seeking to improve the user experience and streamline its product lineup, OpenAI has shifted its focus back to its core product. The move reflects a broader trend toward integrated desktop AI applications and the strategic considerations shaping major technology companies' software portfolios.

OpenAI announced an upgrade to the ChatGPT desktop app that integrates Codex development tools, a built-in browser and computer-control capabilities. At the same time, it said ChatGPT Atlas, the standalone browser launched last year, would cease operations and is expected to be formally retired on August 9. Resources will subsequently be concentrated on the upgraded desktop app.
