DBS Bank Invests NT$30 Million to Protect Tamsui River, Backs Northern Taiwan’s First Internationally Important Wetland

Wugu Wetland is a major waterbird habitat in the Tamsui River basin. The Society of Wilderness began conservation work there in 2002 and, from 2004, worked with the New Taipei City government’s High Riverbank Construction Management Office to manage the adopted site. It was designated a nationally important wetland in 2008 as part of the Tamsui River Basin Wetlands. Northern Taiwan currently has no internationally important wetland, making habitat restoration and long-term monitoring critical not only to biodiversity but also as a measure of the financial sector’s capacity to invest more deeply in nature restoration.

DBS Bank (Taiwan) announced on April 20, 2026, that it would invest NT$30 million in a three-year Tamsui River ecological conservation project launched with the Society of Wilderness in August 2025. Centered on Wugu Wetland, the initiative focuses on habitat restoration, scientific surveys and environmental education. It is expected to produce three bird research reports covering 24 survey routes, building the data needed to assess the site for internationally important wetland status.
