Former Dropbox CTO Says AI Will Replace Hand-Coding as Software Enters Agent Era

Former Dropbox chief technology officer Aditya Agarwal recently shared his experience using Anthropic's AI assistant Claude, saying generative AI has advanced from code completion to autonomously planning and building complex software. The shift means engineers' core value is moving from writing code themselves to defining requirements, reviewing results and managing AI agents. It could also reshape development costs, speed and the division of labor across the software industry.

In a recent article titled “The Work I’ve Spent My Life Doing Is Now Worthless and Readily Available,” Agarwal said Claude can already handle development work that once took engineers considerable time, and that hand-coding could gradually become a thing of the past. He disclosed no specific costs, test dates or productivity multiples, but urged engineers to move beyond a sense of loss and take control of AI tools to remove technical constraints while improving the quality and speed of software output.
