US Lawmakers Press Trump to Retaliate Against EU Tech Rules

The European Union’s Digital Markets Act, enforced by the European Commission, is intended to make digital markets fairer and more contestable by imposing obligations on large “gatekeeper” platforms. Because most designated companies are U.S.-based technology groups, the law has become a major transatlantic fault line over competition, innovation and market access. On July 21, 2026, North Carolina Representative Pat Harrigan publicized a letter signed by 16 members of Congress urging President Donald Trump to use “every available tool” against what they called discriminatory EU digital policies. The lawmakers said the DMA could be extended to Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure, while Google could face the largest DMA fine yet. They urged Washington to consider fees or restrictions on European companies operating in the U.S. unless the EU quickly addresses their concerns.
