Akamai Says 87% of Companies Suffered API Security Incidents in 2025, With 42% Linked to AI

Generative AI is accelerating corporate integration of data, models and services, making APIs central to digital operations while increasing risks such as unauthorized access and data breaches. Cybersecurity company Akamai said attackers are exploiting the complex connections used by LLMs and AI agent services to identify vulnerabilities. Financial services companies are prime targets because they hold vast amounts of sensitive data.

Akamai said in a report released in 2026 that 87% of organizations worldwide experienced an API security incident in 2025, with 42% of those incidents involving APIs related to AI technologies such as LLMs. Financial services was the hardest-hit sector, with 96% of organizations encountering such attacks, indicating that corporate AI adoption has outpaced API governance and security capabilities.
