Belarus Builds Digital Finance Under Sanctions
Belarus enters 2026 with a technically capable digital-finance sector rooted in the Minsk-based High-Tech Park, state-influenced banking and domestic payment infrastructure including BELKART and ERIP. The market differs from venture capital-led fintech hubs: Western sanctions imposed after Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine have restricted access to global finance and redirected trade toward Russia, making locally operated digital banking, payments and software increasingly important to economic resilience.
A Fintech Times outlook published on May 18, 2026, cited World Bank estimates of a population above 9 million, gross domestic product of about $75 billion and GDP per capita near $8,000. Belarusbank is expanding mobile and online services, while Myfin.by, O-plati.by, Hutki Grosh and SoftClub span product comparison, QR payments, digital lending and banking software. The sector’s next constraint is international connectivity and capital access, rather than technical capability.
