Trump SpaceX Stake Deepens Conflict-of-Interest Scrutiny

1 reports · First detected 2026-08-25 · Last active 2026-08-25

SpaceX is a major contractor for the U.S. Department of Defense and NASA and relies on federal approvals for launches, making financial ties between the company and senior policymakers especially sensitive. xAI, Elon Musk’s artificial-intelligence business, has merged with SpaceX. Investments held by President Donald Trump and Small Business Administration chief Kelly Loeffler have therefore intensified scrutiny over whether private financial interests could intersect with government contracting, regulation and technology policy.

A disclosure signed by Trump on Aug. 12, 2026, and released on Aug. 22 showed he bought between $15,001 and $50,000 of SpaceX shares on June 23, one of more than 1,000 trades made in June. Separate filings showed Loeffler held a $1 million-to-$5 million investment in xAI. The White House said independent third-party financial institutions manage Trump’s portfolio and that neither the president nor his family can direct investment selections or trading decisions.
