BBVA Launches Swift Global Retail Payments Scheme in Spain
Swift unveiled its global retail payments scheme in September 2025 to give banks a common rulebook for faster, more transparent and predictable cross-border transfers available around the clock. The initiative, aligned with the G20 roadmap for improving international payments, began with more than 30 early-adopter banks across 17 countries. By March 2026, more than 50 banks had joined, underscoring demand for an international payment experience closer to domestic instant transfers.
BBVA said on July 17, 2026, it had become the first Spanish bank to implement the scheme, acting both as a Debtor Agent for outbound payments and a Gateway Intermediary for incoming funds. Using BBVA Directa, operational since September 2025, and Iberpay’s instant-payment infrastructure, the bank can credit the full amount to Spanish beneficiary accounts in about 25 seconds, 24/7. Initial inbound corridors include China, Australia and Türkiye, while BBVA plans further expansion. No transaction value was disclosed.
