SenseTime Launches Galaxy Project to Scale Domestic AI Chips
China is accelerating development of a homegrown artificial-intelligence computing stack as access to advanced foreign processors remains constrained. SenseTime’s Galaxy Project seeks to connect domestic chipmakers, infrastructure providers and commercial users in a closed loop spanning technology, ecosystem support and deployment. The initiative is important because scaling local processors requires more than chip supply: software compatibility, cluster reliability and viable customer workloads are also critical to reducing reliance on overseas hardware.
SenseTime unveiled the Galaxy Project at WAIC 2026 on July 18 with nearly 20 partners, including Cambricon, Huawei Ascend, Moore Threads, Hygon and BirenTech. The group aims to build five domestic AI computing clusters, each operating at the 10,000-card scale. SenseTime also signed a strategic space-computing partnership with satellite maker GuoXing Aerospace and launched a science-discovery platform with five research institutions, including the Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, broadening the infrastructure’s potential use in orbital computing and scientific research.
