Citigroup Reportedly Weighs Regional Bank Acquisition to Expand Deposits
Since Jane Fraser became chief executive in 2021, Citigroup has continued selling overseas consumer-banking businesses and simplifying its organization, shifting its strategic focus to wealth management, corporate banking and transaction services. Acquiring a large U.S. regional bank could quickly expand its base of low-cost deposits to support lending and markets trading, while testing the progress of its regulatory remediation.
Recent reports said Citigroup executives had discussed acquiring a large U.S. regional bank or brokerage, but had not identified a public target or disclosed a deal value or firm timetable. Citigroup later denied the claims, calling the reports pure speculation. As of July 19, 2026, the market was still watching whether the bank would pursue a major acquisition after advancing its regulatory remediation.
