Amazon Opens ChatGPT Ads to DSP Buyers
OpenAI is broadening ChatGPT beyond subscriptions as it builds advertising into the chatbot, seeking a larger revenue stream while keeping free access available. The tie-up gives it a route to marketers already using Amazon Ads, whose annual advertising revenue is about $70 billion. For Amazon, adding conversational inventory strengthens Amazon DSP as a buying hub beyond its own properties, while marking a significant step in bringing generative-AI interfaces into the programmatic advertising market.
Amazon Ads announced the OpenAI partnership on Sept. 10, 2026, opening a U.S. pilot to selected advertisers, including Delta Vacations. ChatGPT Ads are available through Amazon DSP as a managed service, with text, image and product-feed formats appearing below chatbot responses and purchases offered on CPC or CPM terms. Amazon will help set up and optimize campaigns, while OpenAI retains control over delivery and placement. Participants receive aggregated metrics including impressions, clicks, cost per result, CPM and CPC.

The history behind this eventOpenAI Begins ChatGPT Ad Tests With Target, Adobe Among First Participants
OpenAI is using advertising to broaden ChatGPT's revenue base, targeting free users who account for about 94% of its user base and extending ads to the lower-priced Go plan. The move turns conversations into a channel for product recommendations and brand exposure, while bringing generative AI further into a digital advertising market dominated by Google and Meta.
OpenAI launched its first ChatGPT advertising tests in the United States in 2026, using a cost-per-click (CPC) model for Free and Go users. Other paid plans remain ad-free. Target will place ads through its retail media business, Roundel, with Adobe and other brands also joining the initial test. Neither first-wave budgets nor per-click rates have been disclosed.
