Anthropic Overtakes OpenAI in Revenue as David Sacks Accuses It of ‘Regulatory Capture’
Anthropic initially challenged OpenAI with its Claude models but has recently expanded its commercial footprint through enterprise adoption and demand for coding tools. Former White House AI and crypto czar David Sacks said the shift shows that competition in generative AI is moving from consumer chatbots toward the enterprise productivity market.
As of July 2026, Anthropic’s annual recurring revenue, or ARR, had topped $30 billion, surpassing OpenAI for the first time. Sacks praised its enterprise coding business but accused Anthropic of using warnings about AI risks to pursue “regulatory capture.” He also warned that excessive U.S. preoccupation with AI doomerism could undermine the country’s global competitiveness.
