RGB Renews Bitcoin Asset Standard Push as Tether Plans Native USDT

1 reports · First detected 2026-07-31 · Last active 2026-07-31

RGB is a smart-contract protocol designed to issue and transfer digital assets across Bitcoin and its scaling layers, including the Lightning Network. Its developers want a common asset standard to replace fragmented token systems that operate separately on different layers. The approach could reduce interoperability costs and reliance on cross-chain bridges, while broadening Bitcoin’s role beyond a store of value into an infrastructure layer for stablecoin settlement.

RGB’s updated documentation reiterates that asset-standard push as Tether prepares to issue USDT natively on Bitcoin through the protocol. Tether announced the plan on Aug. 28, 2025, with UTEXO leading commercial development. RGB allows transfers to occur off-chain while retaining Bitcoin-based settlement, avoiding the need to lock tokens in bridges or create wrapped representations. The initiative could return the world’s largest stablecoin to Bitcoin without depending on a separate blockchain.
