EPI, Dutch Banks Set Next Phase of iDEAL-to-Wero Shift
iDEAL is the Netherlands’ dominant bank-based online payment method, while Wero is the European Payments Initiative’s instant account-to-account platform aimed at unifying fragmented national systems. Backed by 18 European banks and payment providers, with more than 50 institutions participating, Wero serves 56 million users and has offered person-to-person payments in Belgium, France and Germany since 2024. Moving iDEAL onto Wero is a major test of Europe’s push for a homegrown payment network and reduced reliance on non-European platforms.
On July 16, 2026, EPI said it had agreed a roadmap with Dutch banks including ABN Amro, ING and Rabobank, and payment providers including Adyen, Mollie and PAY.nl. All Dutch issuing banks are due to connect to Wero in October, after which iDEAL transactions will migrate gradually. The shift is targeted for completion by Dec. 31, 2027, while purchase protection should reach full coverage on Jan. 1, 2028. Wero scheme pricing will remain broadly aligned with current iDEAL | Wero levels through 2028.
