Bitcoin Faces Identity Crisis as Market Narrative Shifts and Stablecoins Gain Ground

1 reports · First detected 2026-02-24 · Last active 2026-02-24

Bitcoin has long built its value proposition around its role as “digital gold,” an inflation hedge and a payment currency. Stablecoins, however, have gained an edge in cross-border payments. In November 2025, Jack Dorsey announced stablecoin support for Cash App. The shift by even a longtime Bitcoin advocate underscored the challenge to the cryptocurrency’s role in payments.

A February 23, 2026, report said Bitcoin had fallen more than 40% from its peak, wiping out over $1 trillion in market value. Data compiled by Bloomberg showed that U.S. gold and related ETFs attracted more than $16 billion in net inflows over the previous three months, while spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded outflows of about $3.3 billion. The figures point to a clear shift in safe-haven flows.
