Mozilla Unveils Firefox Project Nova With One-Click AI Off Switch

Mozilla is positioning Firefox as an independent, privacy-focused alternative as Google, Microsoft and other browser makers race to embed generative AI in everyday browsing. Project Nova is intended to modernize the interface and underlying design system without turning Firefox into a different product. Its significance lies in pairing a warmer, more consistent look with clearer controls over personal data, tracking protection and optional AI, giving users a visible way to reject features they do not want.

Mozilla unveiled Project Nova on May 21, 2026, and plans to roll out the redesign across desktop and mobile later this year. The refresh covers softer tabs, updated icons, warmer colors and reorganized settings; Mozilla also said load times for key page content improved 9% over the past year. A “Block AI enhancements” switch disables current and future generative-AI features. The AI controls already reached desktop users with Firefox 148 on Feb. 24.
