Buterin Puts Privacy, Quantum Resistance at Heart of Ethereum Roadmap
Ethereum has kept evolving since the 2022 Merge shifted the network from proof-of-work mining to proof of stake, but its core protocol remains complex and its transparent ledger poses privacy constraints. Existing ECDSA, BLS and KZG cryptography could also become vulnerable to sufficiently powerful quantum computers. Co-founder Vitalik Buterin calls Lean Ethereum the network’s third major iteration, intended to preserve decentralization while making the blockchain easier to verify, scale and secure for long-term use.
Buterin published an updated roadmap on July 4, 2026, proposing a three-to-four-year overhaul of most core components and elevating privacy to a first-class protocol goal. The plan would shift verification toward recursive STARKs, use AI-assisted formal verification and replace quantum-vulnerable designs. Ethereum Foundation work includes a dedicated post-quantum team and the $1 million Poseidon Prize for hash-based cryptography, while the state roadmap targets more than 100 terabytes of new scalable capacity by 2030.

Ethereum developers broadly support the long-term direction but have urged the Ethereum Foundation to accelerate execution and the pace of upgrades.

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin argues that privacy should become a native network feature rather than an add-on service, reducing the risks of data leaks and censorship arising from users' reliance on third-party tools. Buterin recently proposed several upgrades, including using account abstraction to improve privacy-related operations, strengthening transaction inclusion through FOCIL and introducing new tools to reduce the linkability of onchain transactions. At the time of the report, the Ethereum Foundation had not announced a formal launch date, development budget or complete deployment schedule.

Maximum extractable value, or MEV, bots monitor Ethereum’s public mempool and insert buy and sell orders before and after a user’s transaction, forcing the victim to trade at a worse price in a “sandwich attack.” Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has long criticized such harmful MEV practices and advocated making encrypted mempools a priority on Ethereum’s 2026 roadmap, making the attack on him particularly notable.
On-chain data showed that on April 30, 2026, Buterin swapped 26,544 XDB, worth about $3.86, for 0.00197 ETH, worth about $4.56. The jaredfromsubway.eth bot used about $1.14 million in WETH to sandwich the transaction through SushiSwap and Uniswap V2. CoinDesk reported the incident on May 7.
Vitalik Buterin Unveils New Ethereum Scaling Roadmap to Boost Layer 1 Capacity
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin proposed a new scaling roadmap on February 27, 2026, shifting the focus from the network's recent reliance on Layer 2 rollups toward simultaneously expanding its Layer 1 base layer. In the short term, Glamsterdam would use parallel validation and ePBS to make better use of each 12-second slot. Over the longer term, ZK-EVMs and blobs would increase throughput without raising the barrier to operating a node.
The Ethereum Foundation said on May 11, 2026, that Glamsterdam's multi-client development network was running ePBS reliably and that pricing under EIP-8037 had been finalized. It set a post-upgrade minimum gas-limit target of 200 million, more than triple the roughly 60 million at the time. The mainnet upgrade, originally planned for June, is now expected to be delayed until the third quarter of 2026. ePBS can extend the data-propagation window from about two seconds to roughly nine seconds.
Vitalik Buterin Unveils Ethereum Quantum-Resistance Roadmap
Quantum computers could break Ethereum’s current elliptic-curve cryptography, threatening validator consensus, account signatures and onchain assets. Vitalik Buterin has identified four vulnerable areas in the protocol, including BLS signatures and KZG commitments. Upgrading Ethereum for quantum resistance is therefore critical to its long-term security and the protection of assets on the network.
Buterin has unveiled a comprehensive roadmap, while the Ethereum Foundation has formed a dedicated Post-Quantum team with the goal of completing protocol-level upgrades by 2029. The proposed measures include replacing vulnerable mechanisms with STARK proofs, introducing hash-based signatures into Lean consensus and exploring the use of SNARKs to reduce the performance burden of quantum-safe cryptography.
Vitalik Buterin Unveils Four-Year Ethereum Roadmap Targeting Two-Second Slots
Ethereum currently produces blocks in 12-second slots, while transactions take about 16 minutes to reach finality. Mainnet responsiveness, data propagation between nodes and long-term cryptographic security remain key challenges. Co-founder Vitalik Buterin has therefore drawn on the Ethereum Foundation Protocol team's “Strawmap” to plan concurrent upgrades to consensus and quantum-resistant architecture.
On February 25, 2026, Buterin outlined a roughly four-year roadmap spanning seven forks, with upgrades expected every six months. Slot times would be reduced in stages from 12 seconds to 8, 6, 4, 3 and ultimately 2 seconds, while peer-to-peer network optimizations would prevent duplicate downloads. The target for finality is 6–16 seconds, and major consensus changes will be paired with hash-based, quantum-resistant signatures. Glamsterdam and Hegotá are scheduled to advance in 2026.
