Space AI Expansion Opens New Frontier for Insurers

SpaceX, Blue Origin and Google are among the companies exploring orbital infrastructure for artificial-intelligence computing, extending the data-center race beyond Earth. The push could create a new market for aerospace insurers covering launches, satellites, computing hardware and service interruptions. It also introduces difficult-to-model exposures, including radiation damage, equipment failure, launch losses and collisions with orbital debris.

Insurers are beginning to assess how policies and premiums should be structured as investment in space-based AI infrastructure accelerates. The report did not disclose project costs, insured values or commercial launch dates. With little claims history for orbital data centers, underwriters face substantial uncertainty over failure rates, potential losses and liability allocation, making risk pricing a central obstacle before coverage can scale.
