AI Power Demand Fuels Utility M&A as NextEra Strikes $67 Billion Deal for Dominion
The expansion of data centers driven by generative AI is increasing demand for reliable electricity and investment in transmission grids. Northern Virginia is a major global data-center corridor, and Dominion Energy is the region’s principal power supplier. A completed combination with NextEra Energy would bring Florida and key eastern U.S. power grids onto a single platform, underscoring how AI electricity demand is accelerating utility expansion and industry consolidation in the United States.
NextEra Energy and Dominion Energy announced an all-stock merger valued at about $66.8 billion on May 18, 2026. On July 15, they sought approval from utility regulators in three states, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, targeting completion in the second half of 2027. The combined company would serve about 10 million customer accounts, own more than 110 GW of generating resources and provide $2.25 billion in bill credits.
