Google Expands Taipei AI R&D Center as Computing Demand Surges

The generative AI boom is driving a sharp increase in demand for computing capacity, prompting Google to expand infrastructure spanning its custom Tensor Processing Units, servers and data centers. Taiwan’s integrated semiconductor and hardware supply chain plays a critical role in turning those designs into systems deployed at global scale, making the island an increasingly important partner in Google’s AI strategy.

Google chief technologist Amin Vahdat announced at SEMICON Taiwan 2026 that the company will expand its AI infrastructure research and development center in Taipei’s Shilin district. The project is expected to increase office space by 60%, allowing Google to add research capacity and accelerate project cycles. Vahdat said AI computing demand is growing roughly tenfold each year as he outlined the company’s infrastructure roadmap from TPU chips to data centers.
