Taiwan FSC to Assess Within Three Months How Same-Day Surgery Affects Inpatient Medical Insurance Claims

Advances in medical technology mean many procedures can now be completed in a single day and may not meet the traditional requirement for hospitalization under medical insurance policies, creating disputes over claim eligibility. The issue raises questions about whether older policies can accommodate newer treatments and whether insurance contracts provide equitable value and fair, reasonable protection for policyholders.

Financial Supervisory Commission Chairperson Peng Jin-lung said the regulator will conduct a comprehensive review of medical insurance policies on the market within three months to assess how same-day surgery affects inpatient claims. The Insurance Bureau will also ask the Life Insurance Association of the Republic of China to study possible measures. No precise completion date, number of policies involved or claims amount has been disclosed.
