Tesla Tempers Robotaxi Expectations as Rollout Lags

Tesla launched a small Robotaxi pilot in Austin, Texas, in June 2025 after years of Elon Musk forecasts that autonomous vehicles would reshape the company. He said last year that the network would grow at a “hyper-exponential” rate and reach half the U.S. population by the end of 2025. The stakes are high: investors increasingly view Robotaxi and the Optimus humanoid robot as future profit engines, helping sustain Tesla’s valuation despite pressure on its core auto business.

On Tesla’s July 22, 2026 earnings call, executives adopted a more guarded tone while reporting 2.5 million paid Robotaxi miles, including 380,000 without an in-car safety monitor. Waymo had logged more than 220 million autonomous miles by the end of March. Tesla had targeted seven additional metro areas by end-June but, by July 21, had launched only in Dallas, Houston and Miami before announcing Tampa and Orlando. Musk said city-specific regulation, software and operating issues must be resolved, pledging to scale “as fast as possible” without harming anyone.
