Ethereum Foundation Warns Glamsterdam Gas Changes Could Break Tools
Ethereum’s planned Glamsterdam upgrade will introduce a separate state-gas mechanism through EIP-8037, changing how the network accounts for computation and access to stored data. The overhaul matters because wallets, indexers and developer tools use gas assumptions to estimate transactions and track activity. Software built around fixed limits may no longer reflect Ethereum’s execution rules once the proposal reaches mainnet.
The Ethereum Foundation recently warned that tools relying on hard-coded gas caps could produce faulty simulations, miss indexed data or stop working after Glamsterdam is deployed. Developers were urged to test their systems on the Plataberget testnet and update incompatible code before the mainnet rollout. The reports did not specify a final deployment date, making early compatibility testing the foundation’s immediate priority.

Driven by Ethereum’s core developers, the Glamsterdam upgrade will overhaul both block production architecture and Gas pricing, with implications for ETH value accrual and the network’s underlying economic model.
Ethereum’s core developers have confirmed that Glamsterdam has entered the final stage of development. The upgrade is targeted for the second half of 2026 and no later than year-end. It encompasses three reforms: enshrined proposer-builder separation, or ePBS; block-level access lists; and Gas repricing. Together, they are expected to recalibrate the cost of various onchain operations.
