Microsoft Sustainability Report Highlights AI Data Center Emissions Challenge

The explosive growth of generative AI and cloud computing is prompting global technology giants to accelerate the construction of power-hungry data centers, driving sharp increases in energy use and carbon emissions. As a global AI leader, Microsoft’s progress on its environmental commitments serves as a gauge of the technology industry’s green transition and has implications for efforts to curb global climate change. Microsoft’s latest sustainability report, released in May 2024, showed that its total greenhouse-gas emissions had risen 25% since 2020, mainly because of the expansion of its AI data center supply chain. That same month, Microsoft signed a $10.5 billion renewable-energy agreement with Brookfield Asset Management and stepped up the adoption of liquid-cooling technology as it works toward its goal of becoming carbon negative by 2030. The strategy has become a benchmark for the technology industry’s green transition.
