Clay Makes Employees Accountable Under Companywide AI Writing Policy

Clay, an artificial intelligence sales and go-to-market platform startup, is formalizing how employees use generative AI for internal writing. Its policy rests on the view that “writing is thinking,” allowing AI-assisted drafting while keeping responsibility for reasoning, verification and the reader’s time with the human author. The move highlights a growing corporate challenge: capturing productivity gains from AI without flooding teams with polished-looking documents that add little value.

Clay recently introduced the AI writing policy across the company, requiring employees to take full responsibility for every sentence and idea in a document. It also says the time spent producing a document should exceed the time colleagues need to read it, a safeguard intended to prevent cheap generation from imposing higher review costs on others. Clay has not disclosed an exact implementation date, a numerical time threshold or any spending tied to the policy.
