Eric Trump Says U.S. Must Lead Bitcoin and AI Races, Reveals Family Mining Firm Controls 3% of Global Hashrate

1 reports · First detected 2026-05-15 · Last active 2026-05-15

The United States increasingly views Bitcoin mining, AI computing capacity and energy supply as matters of national security and industrial competition. Since returning to the White House on January 20, 2025, Donald Trump has continued courting the industry by positioning himself as the “crypto president.” His son Eric Trump’s involvement in American Bitcoin (ABTC) has also drawn attention to the intersection of the administration’s policy agenda and the Trump family’s business interests.

Eric Trump said in a recent interview that the United States must win the energy, AI and Bitcoin races simultaneously or risk losing its lead to Asia and the Middle East. He disclosed that American Bitcoin currently controls about 2.5%–3% of global Bitcoin mining hashrate. He also said the Trump administration would pursue cryptocurrency legalization and friendly regulation to preserve U.S. competitiveness.

American Bitcoin (NASDAQ: ABTC), co-founded by Eric Trump and Donald Trump Jr., focuses on Bitcoin mining and asset accumulation. It went public on September 3, 2025, through a merger with Gryphon Digital Mining. The Trump family name has drawn market attention while putting the company’s operating efficiency, equity dilution and risks to retail investors under scrutiny.

On April 28, 2026, Forbes estimated that retail investors had lost about $500 million since ABTC’s listing and questioned its profit model. Eric Trump responded the same day, saying the company held more than 7,000 BTC, operated about 90,000 mining machines and had 28 EH/s of computing power, making it the 16th-largest publicly traded Bitcoin holder. He also alleged that Chinese capital had influenced the report but provided no evidence of interference in the editorial process.

Eric Trump announced that ABTC's holdings had exceeded 6,500 BTC after the company added more than 500 BTC over the previous 21 days. Its holdings subsequently grew to about 7,000 BTC. American Bitcoin also plans to purchase more than 10,000 new mining machines to expand its US mining infrastructure, but reports did not provide the exact dates or values of the announcement and purchase.
