Smarter Navigation Makes Robot Mowers Yard-Ready
Robot lawnmowers have long promised to automate one of home ownership’s most repetitive chores, but early models often required perimeter wires and frequent intervention after losing position or becoming trapped. Advances in LiDAR, real-time kinematic satellite positioning, computer vision and all-wheel drive are addressing those weaknesses. The shift matters because quiet, frequent trimming can keep grass consistently neat while reducing labor, turning the machines into practical outdoor extensions of the smart home.
Recent field tests highlighted the gains. PCWorld tested Segway’s Navimow i210 LiDAR in May 2026 and published its review on June 15, citing strong obstacle detection and quiet operation at a reviewed price of $1,299. A July 20 review of Roborock’s RockMow Z150 found that four-wheel drive, active steering and dynamic suspension handled difficult terrain reliably. The model supports lawns of up to 5,000 square meters and was priced at £2,999, underscoring both the technology’s progress and its premium cost.
