EU Digital ID Deadline Forces Banks to Overhaul Verification
The European Union’s revised electronic identification framework, eIDAS 2.0, is set to make the European Digital Identity Wallet, or EUDI Wallet, a core channel for accessing financial services. Banks, insurers and payment providers will have to accept verifiable credentials held in the wallet, shifting digital onboarding and know-your-customer checks away from document uploads and manual reviews toward real-time cryptographic verification. The change is intended to strengthen privacy and establish authentication that is more resistant to phishing.
Financial institutions face a deadline at the end of 2027 to support the EUDI Wallet as an identity-verification method. Compliance will require more than adding another login button: firms must integrate credential validation, consent management, audit records and fraud controls with existing onboarding and core systems. Banks will also need to test cross-border use cases and operational resilience before deployment, putting pressure on identity vendors and internal technology teams to complete security reviews and implementation work well ahead of the deadline.
